The unfolding scandal at the Delaware Medical Examiner's Office drug lab shows a need for a state-of-the-art crime lab, according to Attorney General Beau Biden.

Biden, in a statement issued Thursday, says police and prosecutors have had to send different evidence to separate laboratories in Delaware, and in many cases to private labs outside of the state.

He adds that this can significantly delay investigations and prosecutions.

The Justice Department's criminal probe into the Medical Examiner's lab continues, and questions about missing or switched evidence could affect dozens of drug cases around the state according to local attorneys.

Senior prosecutors from Delaware have already visited the Maryland crime lab, which could serve as a model.

Also, Biden's office is coordinating a group approach this summer to start the process of planning for a new crime lab facility.
