Delawareans statewide face challenges everyday when it comes to getting to a dental office, and overcoming financial barriers.

State Representative Ruth Briggs-King understands this and is sponsoring House Bill 28, which would allow dental hygienists to travel to certain facilities and provide dental services.

"House Bill 28 is really to give dental hygienists the ability to go ahead and do certain things that their allowed to do normally under their license, but without the close supervision of actually being in the dentist office. There's a big need for dental health, and we realize the impact that dental health has on general medical health."

Briggs-King went on to explain where the services could be offered, if the legislation passes.

"Cleaning might occur at special events or sometimes different locations that are set for that kind of dental work, rather than just strictly in the dental office. We can have wellness clinics at some schools, we can have wellness events in the public. Maybe we could have some of these dental health screenings, if nothing else would really be great."

According to the American Dental Association, approximately one out of three Americans face challenges accessing dental care.
